In The Midst Of It All

There is a story that goes along with this painting as we saw this short eared owl in person a few years ago and took photos of it. It was along side a dirt road just watching us as we pulled over. It kept bobbing its head back and forth at the sound of the cameras. It was definitely curious and wanted to check it out. We drove off after a few minutes and it stayed where it was. It was an overcast evening with dark clouds forming and light rain was coming down. But the owl didn't seem to mind and it stayed in the rain. This was only a juvenile short eared owl, no more than a month old or so. They are very curious at that stage.

When I got home, I knew I had to paint it. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I created the painting. I wanted to convey the story of how resilient these owls are and how they endure it all in order to survive. And with climate change, this is getting more difficult for them. But yet, they are surviving in spite of it. There is a lesson in there for us humans. There is always hope.
