This particular short-eared owl is from my own reference photo I took a few years ago. We were driving around looking for wildlife and spotted this guy sitting on a post. The light was perfect. Then the owl turned it's head toward another owl flying in.
I loved the owl in this scene with the distant hay field and grasses and the muted teal blue sky that cast soft light and shadows.
 
I knew I had to paint it :) 
 
Watching these owls hunt and play, to me, there is nothing better than being in the midst of nature, other than painting them with the memories, on canvas :)
